The Swan Inn

The Swan Inn, Swinbrook, has been called the UK’s poshest and/or most aristocratic pub. It’s where David Cameron once hosted President Hollande for lunch. It’s also closely associated with the Mitford family and boasts a host of famous regulars; Gary Barlow, Jeremy Clarkson, and Kate Moss to name a few!

Despite its’ impressive links and accolades (two AA rosettes for culinary excellence and Dining Pub of the Year by The Good Pub Guide two years running)  it’s also a pub that makes all of its customers feel at home - that’s part of its unassuming charm.

Locals, overseas tourists, day trippers, celebrities, and politicians alike all enjoy the same ambiance, surroundings, and excellent food. Everyone matters here to the dedicated team led by general manager Steve Cook, helping to maintain the unique feel of this historic inn.

Welcomed down to capture a summertime snapshot of all this venue has to offer – we started shooting early before the guaranteed daily rush of customers (up to 3000 a week in high season!)

Captivated by the Mitford memorabilia that was originally curated and displayed byformer owner the late Duchess of Devonshire (Debo) the youngest Mitford sister, we explored nooks and cosy corners before we ventured into the romantic gardens where the famous bantams roam free.

It was then onto the seasonal menu - a mixture of pub classics that keep people coming back week after week (fish and chips and the burger are always on the menu) and more innovative dishes such as the gluten free and vegetarian Curry spiced cauliflower with lentils, honey cumin carrots, chilli, lime, halloumi and nut milk.

With an emphasis on simple, honest cuisine and locally sourced ingredients, head chef Hubert Kosmala has made a reputation for the Swan Inn’s ability to deliver quality food, day after day.

We wished we were staying the night - if only to relax in a free-standing bath and read more about the Mitford sisters’ notorious lives.

The beautifully appointed rooms – either in the converted barn or cottage where the Windrush and Swinbrook rivers meet, hosts guests who want to explore the local area or just relax after dining. With flagstone floors, views across the Cotswolds countywide, cosy but stylish neutral interiors and local Bamford bath products, one night might not be enough!

Job done - we left The Swan Inn more intrigued about the Mitford’s, invigorated having spent time in this beautiful spot and satisfied after sampling so many of Hubert’s delicious dishes.
